How to beat the frizz- Curly Hair Tip!

According to the comic strip Peanuts, “people expect more from you when you have naturally curly hair.” Considering the amount of product, oil, and prayer that is required for a good curl day, I would say the Peanuts are correct. Having done hair professionally for 10 years, I have ran my hands through every type of curl imaginable. From tight and springy, to wavy, and even a mix of both with straight pieces thrown in for good measure, and I’ve discovered that all curly hair is beautiful. But, all curly hair also requires a lot of work.

This fall, the trend is to rock your natural curl, and I am so excited! Myself, I have a blend of ringlets and waves, with a good amount of frizz mixed in from over processing my hair.

Me, on a good curl day

As any curl headed girl or guy knows, not every day is a good curl day. So I am including my number one tip for curly hair care maintenance that will help you to achieve your best curl.

Deep conditioners are your best friend.

Naturally curly or wavy hair is dry and with good reason. Your scalp produces it’s own conditioning and moisturizing agent, called sebum. Once released from the sebaceous glands, the oil travels the length of your hair in order to protect and condition it. When your hair is straight, the oil just has to travel in a straight line, but when your hair is curly it has to take a much more difficult path and therefore it takes longer to reach the ends of your hair. And since most of us wash our hair every day or every other, the sebum gets washed away before it reaches the parts of your hair that need conditioning the most.

Therefore, deep conditioning is essential to reduce frizz and make your curls easier to style. If it’s in your budget, a weekly or bi-weekly trip to your local hair salon for a deep conditioning treatment can restore a lot of moisture to your curls. But if trips to the salon are not in your budget, there is a lot you can do from home.

Invest in a top quality product. Whatever is at the highest price point of your particular budget (need suggestions for your particular hair or budget?- email me: punkrawkboss@gmail.com) and buy the deep conditioning treatment from a salon. Do not buy it on Amazon or at Target or Wal-Mart, or any big retailer. Those products are not always what you think they are and you can only buy top quality products from a hair salon (*be on the look out for a future blog post about why hair care products should only be purchased at a salon, it’s a long and interesting story and most people have no idea where their shampoo comes from).

Once you have your product of choice, once a week get in the shower, shampoo and thoroughly rinse your hair. Apply your deep conditioning product of choice and then get out of the shower. Keep that conditioner in your hair, clip you hair up in a big clip, and put a processing cap or shower cap over your hair. Then go do your dishes, or read a book, or change your oil, do anything for 20 minutes. Once the 20 minutes has passed, hop back in your shower and rinse your hair in the coldest water you can stand.

If you do that once a week, every week, after a month you should see difference in how much frizz you have and how your hair styles.

Don’t have curly hair? That doesn’t matter! You can use the same process, just less often, and still achieve soft and more manageable hair.
